After Ed Martin retired from his career as a cinematographer, during which he helped create an Academy Award-nominated documentary on still photography, he set up a darkroom and studio in his Los Angeles home.

Martin substitutes a specially adapted photographic enlarger or flatbed scanner for a camera, placing objects on glass in the enlarger and then projecting the image onto film. Often related to the themes of life and death, his intimate images are produced slowly, painstakingly, and with love. Among his techniques, he is fascinated by the effect that lamp oil has on plants and flowers, viewing the process as a mysterious metamorphosis. Thinking of his work as an exploration, Martin finds every day as much a discovery of process as it is of composition.

Martinís work is included in many public and private collections including: Los Angeles Museum of Art; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque, NM; The Duchess of York, London; Maggie Weston, Carmel; Dr. Ronald Karlsberg, Beverly Hills.
